A composition in 5 tones

5 tone 1
Simplify the composition into 7/8 large shapes
5 tone 2
Shade those shapes in 5 tones. Make sure there are some darks in the foreground

  1. In this painting we use 5 transparent layers to build up the darks
  2. Use one colour - not a mixture (I used Ultramarine, but paynes grey would also be good)
  3. Test the 5 tones on scrap paper
  4. Paint the whole painting with the lightest colour
  5. Dry and paint the whole painting with tone 2 EXCEPT for where you have tone 1
  6. Dry and paint the whole painting with tone 3 EXCEPT for where you have tone 1+2
  7. Continue adding tones 4 and 5
