Landscape with large sky and clouds

Materials

VanGogh watercolour: Ultramarine blue, Madder lake deep, Raw sienna. Watercolour paper: Cass 300gm.

Note: Cloud shapes are lightest at the top and darker underneath. Clouds get larger the closer they are and smaller the further away they are.

  1. Sketch buildings, mountains & cloud shapes – you can use a soft pencil (4B) or water soluble crayons. Don’t forget to make clouds irregular and different sizes – not like Hoddler!
  2. Wet cloud shapes with clean water
  3. Drop in light tones of yellow (sienna) then pink (madder), then blue - allow to mix on paper. You should be able to see distinct colours not just  1 grey tone.
  4. Paint sky in ultramarine on dry paper adding water to make lighter tones as you work down the page - avoiding most of the cloud shapes but blending others for “lost”edges. Whilst the paint is still wet soften some of the dark blue edges. On the horizon the sky should be almost colourless
  5. Paint in background hills in an irregular line with a mixture of blue and red (more blue than red!). Continue to right side of paper
  6. Add blue for lake and warmer yellows and greens for foreground
  7. Paint buildings very roughly in lighter tones than background hills leave the focal point building white. Add shadows and windows when dry
  8. Add darker grey tones to bottoms of clouds
