Trees in winter |
Course notes: Things to remember
- Draw a frame before starting - then if you don't like the composition you can add a bit
- Sketch out the tree shapes on drawing paper (2B+ - throw away the H pencils L)
- Mix up enough paint - ultramarine blue, raw sienna, burnt sienna
- Keep the board at an angle so that the paint will run down. Remember to paint over the edges
- Start at top left corner with dark shade of burnt sienna on dry paper
- Work quickly adding first ultra b then water to the right then raw sienna. Aim for dark shades to the left and lighter shades on the right
- Add darks on the bottom across the whole width
- Allow to dry
- Draw in tree shapes with water soluble coloured pencil (dark blue or brown)
- Paint clean water on to tree shapes and dab out immediately with kitchen paper. The paint will disappear because we have chosen non-staining colours
- Paint dark trees on right side of paper using ultra blue + burnt sienna with not much water
- Add some texture in the foreground
- Use a rigger or crayon for small branches.
